Our 1% Approach

We care deeply about the planet and creating a business that gives back to nature. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that we’re partnering with One Tree Planted/@onetreeplanted to invest 1% of monthly revenue to planting trees across Canada and the world.

Trees clean our air and water, create habitats for biodiversity, contribute to our health and wellbeing, and create jobs for social impact. Our commitment to a better future combines education and sustainability.

I honestly feel it is well worth price! We looked at a ton of curriculums and but the time you added up all the different elements it was expensive. Schoolio is so simple and straightforward to use. I haven’t regretted our purchase at all!

How Does Schoolio Align with Provincial Government Outcomes?

Not all homeschoolers care to follow provincial government outcomes, if that’s you, Schoolio’s structure lets you mix & match whichever units meet your unique child’s needs and interests!

Some homeschoolers prefer to follow provincial government outcomes, for a variety of reasons. We have you covered too! While it isn’t feasible to modify content to each provincial government’s specific outcomes, as a Canadian curriculum company, we align much better than most! We cover much of the content required by most provinces- including Canadian history and geography, government, and Canada’s international relationships. Combined with our rigorous math program, Schoolio is everything your child needs for a top-quality education!

How Does Schoolio Choose Curriculum Content and Unit Topics?

Schoolio Teacher-Writers choose unit topics and content based on a variety of factors.

To keep our curriculum affordable, the cost down, we only included a small number of worksheets to reinforce our lessons. The Complete Canadian Curriculum books are a cost-effective way to add extra worksheets. There are references to grammar worksheets, sheets that tie into science lessons, so they are valuable.

Data on student achievement from the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shows that Canada has an overall ranking of 6th in the world* for education. A Canadian education is a respected, quality education worldwide, so we use provincial expectations from all over Canada to source unit ideas and content.

Ontario students’ high performance in reading, math, and science was a significant contributing factor to Canada’s overall rankings, and Ontario’s Mathematics Learning Outcomes are the most recently updated by governmental and educational experts. They include areas we at Schoolio feel are crucial to student success in a modern age, such as Coding and Financial Literacy. Therefore, we have modelled our Mathematics program on Ontario learning outcomes, confident that this program is the most up-to-date and thorough of all the Canadian provinces.

We continue to add new units all the time. Some of those are topics included in various provincial outcomes, others are topics we think will interest students. If we think a unit is valuable to all our Schoolio Canadian students, we’re working to create it! Stay connected to see our library grow!

*The OECD is an established organization, with 63 member countries, and has a goal of stimulating economic progress. Since education is tightly linked to economic progress, the OECD ranks the quality, equity, and efficiency of school systems worldwide every three years.

The world is a constant evolving place that our Schoolio students will grow to be a major part of. At Schoolio we believe in a secular, accessible education that includes important world issues like climate change, diversity, and socio-emotional learning. Our goal is to include unit topics that reflect our world and give students a solid foundation not only academically, but socially.

Schoolio Teacher-Writers specialize in a wide variety of areas, from Math District Leads to part-time honeybee farmers, our writers are encouraged to write units based on topics they are interested and experts in!

Our math program is a mastery approach. We follow this approach because we wanted our program to align as closely as possible with the Ontario curriculum guidelines, and mastery is the most common method used in public education.

In a mastery math program, students focus on one topic at a time and develop a thorough comprehension of that topic before moving on. In a spiral math approach, all topics are presented together, weaved amongst each other, and each time a topic is revisited, more depth is added.

There is no right or wrong way to teach math; we chose mastery because it is easier to follow for homeschooling parents and children.

We use the Fry Frequency Words List for our spelling program. The Fry List was developed by Dr. Edward Fry, based on the most common words to appear in English language reading materials. Learning all 1000 words in the Fry List will equip a child to read 90% of the words in a typical book, newspaper, or website.

Because the Fry Lists are listed by frequency of occurrence, rather than difficulty of spelling, students get a mix each week of easier and more challenging words. We believe in this approach to solidify the spelling of simpler words while allowing more focused attention each week on the more challenging words. This balance helps maintain confidence in students.
